Mare of Easttown 2021
I usually watch very few TV series. Because I don't have time to set aside time to watch those episodes. I'm glad I watched Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad when I had the chance. Because if I had missed those at the time, I would have never thought of watching them again. However, the top places in the history of television series are those that can be placed very close to them. I thought about writing this because I recently watched another work that could be put in that category. Fortunately, this is a small-scale series with only eight episodes. That is Mare of Easttown. Since it is my favorite crime/thriller work, I thought I should watch it the day it came out, but since I had to watch all 8 episodes, that thought was suppressed. Apart from being a crime/thriller, I will not say that I wanted to watch it later because Kate Winslet plays the main character. After Titanic, I saw movies like Sense and Sensibility, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Reader, Revolutionary Road, and The Dressmaker, and Kate had become an unforgettable character in my world. So, when that happens, I can't avoid a work like Mare of Easttown. But somehow, I felt like it was a great thing to see it before I die after watching the last part. Even after months have passed since I finished watching it, I can still hear the footsteps of the characters walking around in the world. The story of Mare of Easttown is based on a fictional American village called Easttown. Mare or Mary Ann is a local who works as an inspector at the police station in this village. The police learn that a young girl named Erin, who was the mother of a child, was killed and dumped in the woods in the village. This investigation is entrusted to Mare. Mare, or Mary Ann, is the one who is investigating the murder mystery of Erin throughout the eight episodes of this series. Most of the people living in the village of Easttown know each other. Being a village, it is not a place full of friendships, disputes, and various conflicts between people. Easttown is one such place. Anyway, Mare is the center of this story. She is a mother who lost a child. But her motherhood does not end there. She takes care of her grandson, the child of her son who died prematurely, with great love and care. The child's mother is a drug addict and a woman who is wandering in life. Mare is not ready to hand over the child to her. Mare is portrayed in many ways, including a mother who endures the pain of losing a child and tries to give life to another child, a lover at another time, a police officer who puts her job in danger because personal goals emerge in the midst of her duties, and a trusted friend. These side stories flow in parallel with and in connection with the main story. Even in a detective story, it is rare to see a fairly wide range of life stories unfold. Mare of Easttown does that. The unusual dark places in human relationships, the bright places filled with love, all of these areas are wonderfully shown in 8 parts. People have good human qualities, and in some situations, people deviate from those good qualities in an environment where they need to justify their own actions. What is "good" for one person can have a "bad" effect on another. If you look closely, it is very difficult to give a general judgment about human behavior. The script of Mare of Easttown is the reason for the excellence of this story because it captures these complexities of life very creatively and subtly.
On the other hand, a successful detective story should reveal some mystery at the end. It should be something that no one could have imagined from the beginning. In this respect, Mare of Easttown can be said to be at its best. Because the basic mystery of the story is who killed Erin? Why did anyone do it? From the beginning, the story gives hints that these people may have committed the crime and then takes a different direction in a way that is difficult to imagine at the end.
In that way, Mare of Easttown is perfect as a crime/thriller. The character of Mare, played by Kate Winslet, is the one that carries most of the weight of the story. Needless to say, it is a big challenge to play a character like this. Kate overcomes that challenge with flying colors. I think this is one of the best acts I have seen her perform. The contributions from the other characters are also great. Apart from the acting and script, the cinematography also plays a big role in making this a successful film. Even though it's been a while since I finished watching it, I still felt like writing something about it because the story still resonates in my head. I saw that many people on my friend list had watched it when I came here. If this post can motivate someone who hasn't watched it yet to find it, that's enough.
